Shaking out the Cobwebs

One of my favourite things to do is look at properties for sale. Especially when I feel overwhelmed by my own home and clutter! It turns out that I have expensive taste, the types of homes I love aren’t your usual little suburban homes, but the ones with character, and the ones with character are usually the ones with big juicy price tags.

I find that I look at homes for sale because it helps inspire me to clean up my own home, and often helps me find solutions to our decorating issues. I find it difficult keeping up with both the cleaning and the decorating of our home. Of course the kids do help with chores but it’s not quite the same. Keeping up with what is happening in the kids lives is a job in itself, and so it is very easy to let clutter creep its way back in. One day it would be lovely to sell our home and move to one of the many homes I have fallen in love with over time. Till then, I’ll just have to work on our clutter and see if I can bring our belongings down to the essentials…the things we actually use!

I have to remind myself that it’s not always greener on the other side of the fence. Our side will also become a little greener if we work on our home and the issues we want to sort out. We need to remember that the people who want to sell their homes spend their time freshening them up and making improvements so that they can get a better valuation and price for their home. We have to remember that these homes are on the market for a reason! Why does the owner want to sell? What is it about their home that prompted the owners to put their home on the market?

The main issue with our home is that two of our daughters share a small room, they sleep in a bunk bed, have very little storage in their room and as you can imagine its a struggle when the older of the two works as a baker and has to go to bed early, the other sister gets chucked out of their room. As you can imagine 5 years on, it’s getting very old for the younger of the two. If the older of the two sisters worked a 9-5 type of job, we could probably do this longer, but they are 20 and 18 and it is a lot to expect them to do bunk beds indefinitely. We feel for both of the girls but the problem is that the room is really too small.

Over the years we have tried different configurations, including two single beds, but that means the girls have no room to have anything else in their room! Hopefully we will be able to do something different with our housing situation considering it doesn’t look like the kids will be moving out anytime soon. They really couldn’t afford to move out of home with the way rent is out there in the world, and for what they are trying to do in their lives right now, leaving home really isn’t an option for any of them right now, and if we are being honest, we don’t want them to rush out into the world to live their lives. We are sure they will eventually try living with friends, but we are certainly in no rush to make it happen.

Anyway, till next time,

XO
